Arias was found guilty of murder in the first degree on May 8. On May 15, the jury reached a "cruel manner" verdict following a testimony from medical examiner Dr. Kevin Horn and closing and rebuttal arguments from prosecutor Juan Martinez. Dr. Kevin Horn proved that Alexander died in a "cruel manner."
"Cruel manner" is when a victim suffered physical and or mental pain, according to Arizona law.
Dr. Horn testified that Alexander was alive for every single stab wound he suffered and passed away when she slit his throat from ear to ear which nearly decapitated him. The medical examiner explained that if Arias shot Alexander in the head first, he would have lost consciousness within seconds so he did feel the pain from the stab wounds she inflicted.
According to the autopsy report, Arias stabbed her victim almost 30 times, slit his throat from ear to ear and shot him in the forehead. The report showed that some of Alexander's stab wounds included cuts on his hands which were caused when he tried to prevent Arias from stabbing him repeatedly
Alexander's brother and sister spoke in the courtroom the day after the cruel manner verdict was reached. In their tearful and emotional pleas, Alexander's siblings asked the jury to hand her the death sentence for the horrific crime she committed against their brother.
Stephen Alexander shared how much Travis' death has affected him and his family since he was killed by Arias on June 4, 2008.
"I have nightmares about someone coming after me with a knife," Stephen said choking back tears in video obtained by AZCentral.com. "I don't want these nightmares anymore. I don't want to have to see my brother's murderer anymore. I don't want to hear his name dragged through the mud."
"Our minds are permanently stained with images of our poor brother's throat slit from ear to ear," said Travis' sister Samantha Alexander.
Samantha also said that as a police officer, the evidence photos taken of her brother’s body are “more gruesome than what I’ve seen in 11 years of law enforcement.”
“Our family has bore the burden of extreme financial hardship and loss to be sure that Travis’s life was not forgotten, not lost in vain. To have Travis taken so barbarically is beyond any words we can find to describe our horrific loss.”
