Judge Sherry Stephens denied a motion for a mistrial, which was requested by Arias' attorneys on Monday. After the judge denied their request, Arias' legal counsel immediately requested that they no longer represent the convicted murderer.
Kirk Nurmi asked that he and his partner, Jennifer Willmott, be removed as Arias' counsel.
"We cannot provide effective assistance of counsel and we cannot present a complete picture. This court had a duty to protect Ms. Arias' right to a fair trial and failed to do so time and time again," Nurmi told Judge Stephens, according to AZCentral.com.
According to the report, prosecutor Juan Martinez argued that the defense witness Arias' attorney wanted to bring in to testify, Patricia Womack, has a history of "drug use." He stated that her statements would have been questionable because it "involves the witness and the defendant."
"Your motion is denied," the judge told Nurmi in the Maricopa County courtroom. Judge Stephens then announced that the court session was cancelled for the day without a reason.
According to HLNTV, the cancellation of the day's court session - when Arias was expected to testify - may have been because Nurmi and Willmmott needed more time to prepare for Arias' leniency statement and to call in a witness.
She will testify when the court session resumes on May 21 to beg for her life in a bid to be handed the life sentence instead of the death penalty in the third phase of her near six-month trial.
Arias was found guilty of murder in the first-degree on May 8 and was the jury reached a "cruel manner" verdict on May 15 following a testimony from medical examiner Dr. Kevin Horn and closing and rebuttal arguments from prosecutor Juan Martinez.
