Michael Jackson News: Concert Director Worked Without Contract During 'This Is It' Tour
New testimonies on Monday revealed that neither Dr. Conrad Murray nor concert director Kenny Ortega signed contracts for Michael Jackson's This Is It tour.
Anschutz Entertainment Group, the concert promoter company charged with a wrongful death suit by Jackson's mother, admitted to not presenting contracts to Murray or Ortega. Shawn Trell, AEG's general counsel, revealed that Ortega joined the project through "a series of emails." The plaintiff's lawyer Brian Parish followed up by asking why. Trell responded, "Kenny Ortega is different."
When asked if Dr. Murray was selected through the same system, Trell replied, "No, I don't believe so."
Parish revealed a series of emails to the jury on Monday sent between Murray and AEG. One particular email, dated May 8, 2009, involved AEG agreeing to pay Murray $150,000 a month. The singer died a month later on June 25, 2009.
Businessweek reported that executives at AEG were informed of Jackson's declining health five days before the singer died. Ortega had sent an email to executives days before his death titled, Trouble on the front.
Ortega wrote to AEG CEO Randy Phillips: "There are strong signs of paranoia, anxiety, and obsessive-like behavior," regarding the singer's symptoms.
Ortega explained:
"I think the very best thing we can do is get a top Psychiatrist in to evaluate him ASAP. It's like there are two people there. One (deep inside) trying to hold on to what he was and still can be and not wanting us to quit him, the other in his weakened and troubled state ... I honestly felt if I had encouraged or allowed him on stage last night he could have hurt himself. I believe we need professional guidance in this matter."
On April 2, 2013, Jackson's mother Katherine sued Anschutz Entertainment Group for the wrongful death of her son. Dr. Murray's trial began in Sept. 27, 2011 and ended on Nov. 7, 2011 with his conviction for involuntary manslaughter after giving Jackson a fatal dose of the propfol anesthetic.
