Carrie Underwood Donates $1 Million to Oklahoma Tornado Relief by Red Cross [VIDEO]
Carrie Underwood has donated $1 million to the Red Cross to help the Oklahoma tornado relief efforts.
Underwood is a native of Oklahoma, having been raised in the rural town of Checotah. The 30-year-old singer used the proceeds from her Blown Away tour to help fund the Red Cross in disaster relief efforts.
"I have watched the devastation in my home state of Oklahoma over the past several days with great sadness," said Underwood in a statement. "With the help of my fans who attended my concerts over the past year, we can offer the Red Cross a little extra help in comforting those affected by the recent tornados."
The Red Cross has welcomed her donation with open arms as they continue to aid in recovery.
"The impact of the tornados in Oklahoma and the Midwest was devastating and the road to recovery will be long for many families," said Neal Litvack, chief development officer for the Red Cross.
He added: "Through the generosity of Carrie, the American Red Cross can quickly respond with shelter, food and comfort now, and with lasting help as they move toward recovery."
The tornado that rocked Moore, Okla., on Monday killed 24 people, including 10 children. The tornado caused over $2 billion in damage, devastating over 13,000 homes.
Underwood rose to fame after winning the fourth season of American Idol. Since winning, she has become the most successful Idol alum in the show's history, selling over 12 million albums and 18 million digital tracks.
Underwood has released four albums, three of which have peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Primarily a country artist, the singer has had some crossover success, with songs like Before He Cheats and I Told You So reaching the top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart.
It was recently announced that Underwood would be the new singer of Sunday Night Football's opening theme, replacing Faith Hill.
