Apple Developing In-House CPU Chips Will Be Free Of Intel Dependence [VIDEO]
The majority of Apple's products, such as the iPhone and the iPad, are currently being powered by the company's own proprietary processors. However, their different laptop lines still continue to depend on chips provided by Intel. Now, new reports have revealed that Apple may be in the process of building their own CPU chips in an effort to free themselves from having to depend on processors from other suppliers.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple has apparently been working on their proprietary new chips since last year. The CPUs are reportedly intended to be placed on future generation MacBook Pro laptops. The report further reveals that the chips will eventually be used to "take on more of the functionality handled by Intel chips."
The rumored new processor, allegedly codenamed T310, is reportedly going to be built using an ARM-based architecture, as per a report from CNET. Apple has of course already a lot of experience with this type of engineering, as the processor running the Touch Bar on the new 2016 MacBook Pro is also ARM-based.
The same report also claims that the chip itself will likely be initially handling a laptop's low-power mode functionality. When further processing power is required the laptop will likely have to hand off all function to another dedicated processor.
At the very least, the first iteration of the Apple-built processors will likely be used to boost their laptop's battery life. If the alleged processor eventually becomes powerful enough to run an entire laptop, next generation MacBook Pro devices may look and function more like iPhones and iPads in the near future.
The move wouldn't really be out of place for the company as they are determined to eventually have all of the components of their devices built in-house. There is currently no confirmation yet from Apple themselves if any of the claims are indeed true. Apple representatives who were asked about the alleged chip have also declined to comment.
