Daft Punk New Album 'Random Access Memories' Debuts No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart [VIDEO]
Daft Punk's newest album, Random Access Memories, has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
The electronic duo sold 339,000 copies in its debut week, the highest first week sales since Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience in March. They have the second-highest debut sales for any musical act in 2013.
Random Access Memories was expected to peak at 300,000 copies, according to industry experts, which means the album sold much more than expected.
Daft Punk's last album, Human After All, has only sold 125,000 copies to date, debuting at No. 98 in 2005. Discovery, the band's highest-selling album bowed in 2001 and has sold 796,000 copies to date.
Billboard notes that Random Access Memories is the first dance album to hit No. 1 since Madonna's MDNA, which came out April 2012.
The band came out with their first new single, Get Lucky featuring Pharrell Williams, in April. The song is in the No. 10 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, making it the band's first top 10 hit. It is also in the No. 3 position on the iTunes singles chart, as of Wednesday.
Rounding out the top five on this week's Billboard 200 are three debuts and a soundtrack.
Darius Rucker, lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish, debuted at No. 2 with 83,000 copies sold of True Believers. At No. 3 and 4 respectively are The National's Trouble Will Find, selling 75,000 copies and French Montana's Excuse My French, with 56,000 copies. The Great Gatsby soundtrack is in the No. 5 position, selling 54,000 copies.
This news of Daft Punk's success comes just days after Enstars reported that Daft Punk was breaking records in the U.K. and on streaming service Spotify for Random Access Memories.
Random Access Memories has received near universal acclaim from music critics, with review aggregator Metacritic citing many perfect 100 scores.
"It is the boldest, smartest, most colourful and purely pleasurable dance album of this decade," said The Telegraph.
The album is in stores and can be downloaded on iTunes or streamed on Spotify.
