Tamra Barney was the keynote speaker at the Los Angeles Women’s Expo on Monday, where she confessed that she tried to take her own life as a young adult.

The star of The Real Housewives of Orange County said, “I took a bunch of prescription medication that I found in my mom’s cupboard, then my mom found me and they took me to the hospital. They admitted me into a mental hospital.”

Barney said her attempt at suicide came after her first divorce. The reality star admitted in her talk that she was experiencing bouts of low self-esteem and she let herself be controlled by men, The Huffington Post reported. Barney said that now she’s in a much better place, and the video of her speech circled the web after being posted on Twitter.

According to The Stir, Barney sounded like she was trying to blame other people for her issues during her talk. The website stated that the reality star was relaying that because her parents never told her they loved her growing up and this made her unable to express her emotions.

And Buddy TV reported that Tamra’s speech didn’t suit the program, which was intended to give helpful information to the women.

“Instead of giving these women useful information or even being entertaining, she opts for a sob story about how she didn't feel loved growing up. If it weren't so ridiculously self-indulgent, it would be hilarious,” stated the report.
