A crash in upstate New York Wednesday involving a minivan hit by a trailer killed seven people, including four young children under the age of 10, and three adults in their early 20's.

According to Cortland County Coroner Whitney Meeker, all victims were residents of the area. MyFoxNY.com reported that the incident occurred when a trailer that separated from a truck on Route 13 hit the van, injuring a man and killing the 10 victims. It occurred at about 6 p.m. in a small town of Truxton, 25 miles south of Syracuse.

Although information on the condition of the injured man was not released, he was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, boston.com reported.

Meeker said the children were from two different families, one being from Truxton and the other living nearby. Authorities have not released the names of the victims. A dispatcher said the agency planned to release more information later in the day.

Officials said the trailer was packed with crushed cars when it disconnected and rammed into the van. Police closed Route 13 until 1:20am on Thursday while they cleared the scene and investigated the crash.

According to Sheriff's Capt. Mark Helms, two people in the truck were not injured.
