Katy Perry New Song: 'Chained to the Rhythm' Video May Be Her Most Meaningful [VIDEO]
Katy Perry's video for her new single "Chained to the Rhythm" is here, and provides a futuristic view of the world not unlike our own.
Perry visits a colorful amusement park in the video for "Chained to the Rhythm", which was released early Tuesday. The singer sports cotton candy-like pink hair as she observes her fellow park-goers who are wrapped up in the experience. She observes one ride called the "Great American Dream Drop" which takes couples into a house and drops them from the sky. She then gets on a roller coaster with a man, waving their hands in the air as they go through a tunnel filled with emojis of affirmation.
The video also includes people running on hamster wheels, being hurdled over a wall and drinking water that's on fire. Skip Marley appears through a giant television set to rap his verse and Perry begins to realize that everyone is seemingly brainwashed into performing societal norms and ignorant to those around them. Perry is then shown running on the hamster wheel before stopping and giving a steely-eyed look to the camera.
The "Chained to the Rhythm" video certainly matches the subversive lyrical content of the song, which addresses conformity and ignorance in today's society. Perry's epic look to the camera at the end of the video seems to serve as a warning sign that the societal willingness to accept everything that happens in the world, even the atrocities, needs to be reexamined.
The song is certainly more meaningful than songs Perry has put out in the past, and she has admitted in interviews that she is more fully conscious of the messaging in her songs.
"I'm so proud of [the song]," Perry told Ryan Seacrest on the Grammys red carpet. "I think it's a new era of me. I call it an era of purposeful thought. All of my songs have always had layers to them. ... I used to be kind of the queen of innuendos, and I woke up and educated myself more, and I think I'm maybe more the queen of subtext, and I think it's a song that starts conversations ... and I think we need to listen to each other."
"Chained to the Rhythm" will be featured on Perry's upcoming fifth studio album.
