Bruno Mars’ mother died of a brain aneurysm on June 1, according to the singer’s publicist for his record label Atlantic Records.

Bernadette Hernandez, 55, suffered a heart attack in Hawaii a day earlier and was treated at the Queens Medical Center in Honolulu. The divorced mother of six is survived by Mars and his siblings Eric, Presley, Tehiti, Tiara and Jamie.

Mars and his brothers and sisters, generally active via Twitter, have posted infrequently since Friday. The When I Was Your Man singer along with his brother Eric, who plays the drums in his band, were seen in Los Angeles on May 31 after arriving from Berlin.

Hernandez's condition was first reported by Star, noting that she was rushed to the hospital and was in critical condition.

“Bernadette is in hospital and the grandkids are all here, I’m looking after them,” family friend Anita Sojot told the magazine. “The family is on it’s way here right now and we are going to discuss what to do next.”

In the April issue of Rolling Stone, Mars talked about his childhood and experiences singing in a family band. He said, “I wouldn't trade it for anything because I feel like I can enjoy this so much.”

At age four the singer recorded a tune titled I Love You Mom, an 1980's style synth ballad where he calls his mother "my favourite girl."

"My mommy helps me with my voice / cuz a superstar singer is my first choice," he rhymes.
