Demi Lovato has been vocal about her rehab and struggles with bipolar disorder and bulimia, and now the singer opens up about another difficult subject.

She said as a youngster she struggled with suicidal inclinations, which forced her family and school offiicals to take action.

"The principal called my parents and made me sign this suicide contract saying that I would not kill myself [when I had suicidal thoughts at age seven]. They weren't expecting that so young," she told Rolling Stone in the magazine's June issue.

Lovato also spoke about her third album Unbroken, released in 2011. Although the album peaked at the No. 4 position on the Billboard charts, it received mixed reviews from critics. Jon Caramanica wrote for The New York Times in 2011, "Even though Ms. Lovato can pull off R&B siren, she's always seemed interested in the role of rock goddess, and here, she toggled between the two."

The X Factor judge told the publication why the album's sound is a mixed bag.

"I wanted to be like Rihanna," she said of the direction she attempted to take with her music. "But I had to learn that wasn't me."

Lovato's fourth album Demi was released on May 14 and peaked at No.3 on Billboard. The album also features a song called Warrior, where Lovato speaks of her life battles.

"All the pain and the truth I wear like a battle wound, so ashamed, so confused, I was broken and bruised," she sings. "Now I'm a warrior, now I've got thicker skin, I'm a warrior."

The singer visited Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in May and spoke about the album and song. She said on the record she was "really, really honest," and that the song was difficult for her to "write, record and release" at a time where she had a lot going on in her personal life.

"It was kind of like a tribute to releasing an album as well as overcoming some really, really difficult things in my life."
