Although The CW's The Vampire Diaries is still a ways away from its Season 5 premiere, it still continues to garner a massive amount of buzz for its upcoming season.

Executive producer Julie Plec recently spoke to Zimbio on Damon and Lexi's past, and how it's manifested on the small screen.

"We didn't know with Lexi and Damon that that was their backstory when we did '162 Candles,' but we did know that they had a history. They felt like they had a history that was untold. SO it was fun for us to be able to circle all the way back around to be able to tell that," she said.

Plec also took the opportunity to elaborate on character deaths amid a TV series with immortals and ghosts. She acknowledged that dealing with the various elements and traits of the different characters can be quite the tricky task.

"We believe that death needs to have real stakes. But it wasn't until we created the ghost story and the idea of the Other Side that we started getting more of a glimpse of the people we had loved.

Although no airdate has yet to be announced, Vampire Diaries Season 5 is slated to begin at some point in September. Its spin-off series, The Originals, is set to start up again at some in October.
