A source told the celebrity weekly that the What I Like About You actress "hooked up twice" with the The Hunger Games star.
"Then it "just fizzled" added the insider to explain why it ended so quickly.
The news of their hookup came to light after Bynes tweeted about the Australian hunk on June 4. She wrote on the social media site, "Liam Hemsworth is the most gorgeous man on the face of the earth."
Shortly after, a photo of Bynes with Hemsworth taken at a Los Angeles nightclub in 2009 surfaced online.

Cyrus was asked during an interview with Hot 95.5 hours later on Wednsday what she thought of Bynes' Twitter bash. The former Disney star described it as "sad," adding, "I won't even entertain that thought."
"I think it's all so sad and I don't want to add any fuel to that fire. It's really so sad to me. I was rooting for her comeback until (she) started attacking me.
"I just thought it was hilarious that she mentioned my name the moment I was the worldwide trending topic on Twitter," Cyrus added while suggesting it was a publicity stunt.
"It's just funny the moment you're a trending topic how many people want your name to come of their mouth, so somehow they can associate and maybe they can become a trending topic," Cyrus said.
Cyrus was asked to address the rumors about a relationship with Justin Bieber were true and she told the DC radio station: "I'm engaged. I'm engaged!"
