There is a fear that Joss Whedon might pull The Avengers 2 down a darker path, but the writer/director claims he is going to try and keep the sequal light.

Whedon has already proved to Marvel that he can create a hit that can drag viewers through the tough fight scenes and the emotional turmoil but still bring them out of the theatre laughing. It's a feat he hopes to repeat with the second installment of The Avengers.

"[I'm] Tony Stark desperately trying to be Steve Rogers. I can't stop making jokes," Whedon confessed, according to Metro. "The joy of the thing is important: the exaltation, the nobility, the humor and the humanity. But you do need to bleed with these people a little bit or you won't want to spend another day with them."

Whedon has promised not to "go Nolan." In other words, while he wishes to emulate Nolan's incredible film making abilities, Whedon will not be making his next Marvel film quite as dark as the Dark Knight trilogy.

However, Whedon, who wasn't initially planning on directing on the second Avengers installment, says the stress of working on a third film might result in gratuitous character death, according to Metro.
