The new Ryan Gosling revenge thriller Only God Forgives premiered its first theatrical trailer on Friday.

The film stars Ryan Gosling as Julian, a drug smuggler living in Bangkok whose mother (played by Kristen Scott Thomas) tells him to avenge his murdered brother. The ultra-violent thriller is Gosling's second collaboration with director Nicolas Winding Refn. The pair worked together on the similarly violent Drive in 2011.

In the new trailer, Julian's mother Crystal tells him to protect her by going after all of the men who murdered his brother. Crystal fuels his fire by threatening his sense of honor.

"If the tables were turned, your brother would've found your killer and brought me his head on a platter!" she commands.

The scenes to follow emphasize stylized visuals and ultra-violence, much like the hyper-stylized '80s imagery featured in Drive. The synthesized music in the trailer even hearkens back to the music featured in the 2011 film.

"I have a very special relationship with my son. He's a very dangerous boy," Crystal says. As the trailer ends, Gosling's Julian stares at an opponent in silence before daring, "Wanna fight?"

Only God Forgives premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May to mixed reviews. The film received resounding boos at its first screening on Wednesday, May 21. Many critics noted that while the film's style is well done, its substance leaves much to be desired.

Despite being second billed, Thomas said that the film's violence made her not want to see it.

"This kind of film is really not my thing," she told reporters at Cannes, "Films where this kind of violence happens I don't enjoy watching."

Refn defended the film's bloody style, saying, "Art is an act of violence. Art is about penetration. Art is about speaking to our subconscious and our needs at different levels."

Only God Forgives will be premiering in theaters on July 19.
