Chad Johnson Being Released From Jail, Florida Judge Reduces 30 Day Sentence of Ex NFL Star [VIDEO]
Chad Johnson will be released from a Florida jail later today, The Huffington Post reported Monday.
Johnson apologized to Judge Kathleen McHugh for his actions last week when he slapped the behind of his attorney, Adam Swickle, while appearing before the court for a probation hearing for his domestic abuse case. In 2012, Johnson was arresting for head butting his then wife, Evelyn Lozada. Sickle told the judge that the gesture was one of thanks in football.
''I just wanted to apologize for disrespecting the court last time,'' Johnson said. ''I apologize. I did have time to reflect on the mistakes I made in this courtroom.''
Johnson was attired in a tan jail jumpsuit with his hands shackled at the waist. The judge ultimatly accepted his show of contrition, but she called his actions against his former wife “horrific” and declared that he had an “arrogant disregard for a court order” because of his failings to show up for mandated meetings with his probation officer. Johnson was ordered to perform 25 hours of community service and attend domestic violence counseling sessions twice a week during probation. His probation was also extended to October. She then shortened his jail sentence from 30 days to seven.
It was a change of heart for the judge who sentenced the former NFL wide receiver to serve 30 days in jail on June 10. She felt he was not conducting himself in an appropriate manner. She immediately rescinded a plea agreement that prosecutors and Johnson entered into. The Broward County Circuit judge also added an additional three months' probation because Johnson had failed to meet with his probation officer during three previous months.
"The whole courtroom was laughing. I'm not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn't a joke," McHugh said.
After the judge's decision to lock up Johnson, many believed that she had overstepped her boundaries. FL Atty. Gen. Pam Bondi disagreed with the decision and told TMZ so on June 11.
"Although we never condone domestic violence, this event seems to question judicial temperament, not the subject matter before the court," Bondi said.
During his weeklong stay in prison, Johnson was visited by Terrell Owens. They were teammates with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010. Owens posted about the visit on Twitter June 15, describing Johnson as needing a haircut but that he was in good spirits.
"I really didn't know what to expect but to see the homie locked up is a very humbling experience, to talk to him via vid conference let me know that's not where anyone wants to be. I know he's only in the county jail but to someone that has never been locked up...Jail is Jail!" Owens tweeted.
