Detective Pikachu To Be Played By Ryan Reynolds In An Upcoming Live-Action Pokémon Movie
Back in 2016, a live-action movie starring Detective Pikachu got greenlit. Fast-forward to today, there's now an actor to play the electric mouse's part in, well, Detective Pikachu, and it's none other than Ryan Reynolds.
The Deadpool star will be joined by Justice Elio Smith, best known for his role in the Netflix show The Get Down, and Kathryn Newton, who starred in Gary Unmarried and Paranormal Activity 4, to name a few.
Monsters vs. Aliens and Shark Tale director Rob Letterman will take the lead, while Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman are the minds behind the script.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story is about Newton's character getting forced to team up with Detective Pikachu after his father was kidnapped. Meanwhile, Newton will take on the role of a journalist.
Sources also say that the role is "motion-capture in nature."
Needless to say, details surrounding Detective Pikachu are scarce at best for now, which media company Legendary has been keeping under wraps tightly.
Universal is expected to distribute the movie outside of Japan, while Toho will take care of things in Japan.
Now it's no mystery that the typical Pikachu knows only three syllables: "pi," "ka," and "chu" — or rather, they can only say their names in various tones and nothing else. Kind of like Groot in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, where Vin Diesel was signed on to say, "I am Groot," throughout the movie.
However, Detective Pikachu is no ordinary Pikachu because, aside from the fancy detective cap a la Sherlock Holmes (also known as a deerstalker), this Pikachu can talk. That means Reynolds won't be subjected to numerous recording sessions of saying "Pikachu" over and over again with various inflections.
It's worth mentioning that this isn't the only instance that a Pikachu talked straight English, Japanese, or any other human language, for that matter. For those who missed it, Ash's Pikachu spoke perfect English in Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! and said, "It's because I always want to be with you."
(Excuse the language.)
To sum things up, Reynolds is going to play Detective Pikachu in a movie called Detective Pikachu. Sounds about right.
