'The Shape of Water' Evaporates Competition
Critics' Choice Award favorite, The Shape of Water, earned seven nominations. The film was nominated in the Best Motion Picture-Drama category while Guillermo Del Toro received a nomination for Best Director-Motion Picture. Del Toro also shared a nomination with Vanessa Taylor for Best Screenplay- Motion Picture.
Actors Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Hawkins each placed in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in A Supporting Role, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
Composer Alexandre Desplat picked up the seventh nomination with Best Original Score-Motion Picture.
Other Honorable Nominees In Films
The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri each received six nominations.
In addition to The Post being nominated for Best Motion Picture-Drama, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep each earned places in the Best Performances-Drama category. Film legends Steven Spielberg and John Williams each received a nomination for Best Director and Best Original Score-Motion Picture.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 's Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell each scored acting nominations while the film picked up Best Motion Picture-Drama.
Veteran actor Christopher Plummer earned Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for All The Money in the World. Plummer replaced the film's original actor, Kevin Spacey, after he was let go when sexual misconduct allegations against him surfaced.
Greta Gerwig's breakout film, Lady Bird, earned four nominations. The film and lead actress Saoirse Ronan previously won New York Film Critics Circle Awards for Best Picture and Best Actress.
'Big Little Lies' Tops TV
The Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman HBO drama, Big Little Lies, topped the television portion of the Golden Globes. The series picked up six nominations including Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made For Television.
Both Witherspoon and Kidman were nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Actresses Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley each earned spots in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made For Television.
Finally, Alexander Skarsgard picked up a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in A Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
'Will And Grac'e Returns And Other Honorees
Beloved NBC sitcom Will And Grace made its return to the Golden Globes after an 11-year hiatus. The show was nominated for two awards including Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series for Eric McCormack.
Feud: Bette vs. Joan picked up four nominations including Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Both Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon picked up nominations for their portrayals of the silver screen icons. Also, Alfred Molina picked up Best Performance by an Actor in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
Late Night with Seth Meyers host Seth Meyers will emcee the 2018 ceremony, which will go live from Los Angeles' Beverly Hilton on Sunday, Jan.7 on NBC.
