After Lil' Wayne sparked controversy for stepping on an American flag in his new music video, the Young Money rapper responded to the criticism on Twitter.

"I didn't step on the flag on purpose!" Wayne wrote on Twitter Tuesday. "It's a scene in a video where the flag drops behind me and after it drops, it's just there as I perform."

Wayne drew ire on Twitter after WorldStarHipHop.com published a 1-minute, behind-the-scenes video of him on Sunday. In the clip, Weezy is on the set of his new music video for his upcoming single God Bless America. The 30-year-old is singing the lyrics to the song while an American flag hangs behind him while a large crowd of film extras surrounding him in Hollygrove, New Orleans. After the flag is dropped to the ground, Lil' Wayne continues to rap and calmly begins to walk back and forth all over the stars and stripes portion of the flag.

After TMZ tweeted the video on Monday, comments were posted on TMZ's Twitter timeline by those who expressed disapproval of Lil' Wayne's actions

"Lil Wayne standing on a American flag for a music video?... Really? That's disrespectful to the extreme..." @joeysavatgy176 wrote.

"The United States Flag Code - 'The Flag should NEVER be stepped on' way to go Lil Wayne," wrote Twitter user @OG_LoTus2h.

The website's article also pointed out that the song itself contains controversial lyrics.

"My country 'tis of thee/ Sweet land of kill 'em all and let 'em die/ God bless Amerika/ This ole' godless Amerika", Lil' Wayne reportedly raps.

Lil' Wayne's Twitter statement may be another attempt to reduce the growing backlash he achieved this year. In May, Pepsi Co. ended his endorsement deal with the Mountain Dew soda brand after the rapper mentioned the late Emmitt Till in the remix to Future's Karate Chop. In the rap song Wayne rapped, "beat the p**sy up like Emmett Till."

Till was a teenager who was murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman in 1955. Till's death sparked riots around the country at the time.

After Till's family called for the boycott of Lil Wayne's upcoming America's Most Wanted Tour and asked that his endorsement deal be dropped, the rapper issued an apology on May 1. However, the family announced they wouldn't accept his apology, according to The New York Times.
