Star Wars: The Last Jedi Continues To Conquer The Box Office
The Force is still strong with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The latest chapter in the Star Wars franchise topped the box office once again.
The Last Jedi Versus Jumanji
Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues to pulverize its competition. The eighth chapter in the science-fiction space opera collected $68.4 million during the final days of 2017. The film, which marked the last appearance of Carrie Fisher's General Leia Organa, has picked up over $533.1 million in the domestic box office.
The film's closest rival was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The Jumanji reboot, which featured an all-star cast, including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan, earned $66.5 million and came in second place in the box office race.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, also paid homage to the late Robin Williams, who headlined the original fan-favorite 1995 family film. The live-action thriller accumulated $185.7 million since its release on Dec. 20, 2017.
2018 Golden Globes Preview
A bulk of the films that were nominated for Golden Globes were also featured in the weekend's box office. The Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and Zendaya-led musical film The Greatest Showman was placed fourth in the New Years' box office race. The musical film, which highlighted the early life of entertainment entrepreneur P.T. Barnum, earned $20.8 million.
The Greatest Showman has been nominated for two Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy and Best Original Song. Jackman also picked up a Best Actor-Musical or Comedy nomination for his portrayal of Barnum.
Two animated films that are up for both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song are Ferdinand and Coco, respectfully placed fifth and sixth on the box office list. Ferdinand earned over $14.6 million at the box office while former box office king Coco secured a $9.7 million.
Darkest Hour, which highlighted legendary British prime minister Winston Churchill's first days in office, came in seventh place. The biographic film, which stars Gary Oldman as the United Kingdom Prime Minister earned $7.6 million at the box office. Oldman is nominated for Best Actor-Motion Picture Drama for his portrayal.
All the Money in the World and Downsizing rounded out the Golden Globe-nominated films that made an impact on the New Years' weekend box office. All the Money in the World, which made headlines for casting Christopher Plummer at the last minute to replace embattled actor Kevin Spacey, earned $7.5 million. Plummer's performance of J. Paul Getty earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor-Motion Picture.
All the Money in the World also received Golden Globe nominations for director Ridley Scott (Best Director-Motion Picture) and Michelle Williams (Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama). Downsizing came in ninth place in the weekend box office with $6.1 million. Actress Hong Chau is the only performer in the Matt Damon drama to earn a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress-Motion Picture.
Pitch Perfect 3 and Father Figures completed the box office lineup as they each made $21 million and $5 million respectively. The final Pitch Perfect film placed in the Top 3 while Father Figures came in 10th place.
