Radiohead Sues Lana Del Rey For Plagiarizing Hit Song
Lana Del Rey got a case of "Summertime Sadness" in January. Rock band Radiohead sued Del Rey for allegedly plagiarizing one of their songs.
Del Rey Versus Radiohead
Multiple reports have surfaced that the English rock band Radiohead has sued the four-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter for copyright infringement. The group claimed that Del Rey plagiarized their iconic song, "Creep," when she recorded her song "Get Free" for her latest studio album Lust for Life.
On Jan. 7, the "Born to Die" singer-songwriter took to Twitter revealed that there was truth with Radiohead's legal proceedings. Del Rey reassured fans that when she wrote "Get Free," it was not inspired by Radiohead's signature song. She also explained that the band firmly believed that it has elements of "Creep" in it and demanded publishing rights to the song.
"I offered up to 40 over the last few months, but they will only accept 100. Their lawyers have been relentless so we will deal with it in court," Del Rey tweeted.
Del Rey's History With Recording Artists
Radiohead is not the only recording artist to have gone after or made threats to Del Rey. In 2014, Rocker Marilyn Manson along with horror film director Eli Roth released a music video that graphically featured Roth assaulting Del Rey. While Manson's representative denied his involvement with the video, fans allegedly saw the musician walk away from a crying Del Rey. The video was pulled shortly from YouTube.
That same year, Eminem aimed controversial lyrics at Del Rey. The rapper collaborated with several artists on a massive track which was part of his record label Shady Records. On the track, "Cxvpher," Eminem stated that he would "punch Del Rey in the face twice." Before Del Rey became one of his targets, the "Video Games" singer stated she loved Eminem and nicknamed him "the master of lyrics."
The Tour Must Go On
Despite facing Radiohead's lawsuit, Del Rey is moving full speed ahead with her LA To The Moon Tour. Her latest tour highlights her Grammy-nominated studio album, Lust for Life. Del Rey's fifth studio album features several significant tracks such as "Coachella-Woodstock on the Mind" and her hit collaboration with The Weeknd, "Lust for Life." "Lust for Life" was named one of Rolling Stone's Best Songs of 2017.
Del Rey is expected to end her North American Tour on Feb. 28 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
A court date has not been announced.
