Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Takes Back No. 1 Spot At The Box Office
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is back at the top of the weekend box office, reclaiming the number one spot seven weeks after opening day.
The star-studded comedy film was released last December, but it is at the top again this February.
This is a feat that was last achieved by James Cameron's Titanic.
The Jumanji reboot raked in $11 million in ticket sales over the weekend, according to studio estimates. While this may not be enough to dominate busy weekends in theater, it is a great number during the slow Super Bowl weekend. Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which topped the previous weekend, slid to second place.
Unconventional Box Office Success
Competing with Star Wars: The Last Jedi for its first two weeks, Jumanji failed to wrestle the top spot away in the beginning.
Positive critical reviews and good audience reception propelled the film to number one on its third week. Now, it is one of Sony Picture's most successful films behind the Spider-Man series.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has already made $352.6 million in North America. Additionally, it earned $503.1 million internationally for an impressive total of $855.7 million in earnings.
Not only is the reboot of the 1995 classic a remarkable feat for Sony, but also for one of its stars Dwayne Johnson. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is close to becoming the highest grossing film in the domestic box office of Johnson's career. The movie is only around $300,000 behind Furious 7, which made $353 million domestically.
Jumanji also stars Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan.
Top 5 Movies
Four out of the top five films in the weekend are not new releases including the top two Jumanji and Maze Runner, the latter of which declined by 58 percent to earn only $10.2 million in ticket sales.
Following these two big hitters is the only new wide release of Super Bowl weekend, Winchester. Starring Helen Mirren, the horror movie launched with $9.3 million.
At fourth place is the musical The Greatest Showman led by Hugh Jackman in a song-infused drama about P.T. Barnum and circus life. It earned $7.8 million during the weekend.
Finally, Western drama Hostiles rounded off the five best earners with $5.5 million.
Super Bowl is known to be the lowest-earning weekends of the year for movies. This year, total ticket sales only amounted to $92 million.
