Katharine McPhee Is Making Her Broadway Debut In ‘Waitress’
With American Idol returning to ABC in March, contestants are hoping that the show will be the perfect launch pad for their careers. If fans may recall, one of the more successful American Idol alumni is Katharine McPhee.
Katherine McPhee Hits Broadway
12 years since she took home second place in the singing competition, McPhee is about to make her Broadway debut.
"So excited to be making my Broadway debut and joining the cast of Waitress on April 10 as Jenna! Preparing for the role with this apple pie. Thanks, Sara Bareilles for choosing me to take over the diner!" wrote McPhee on her Instagram account on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
Fans Congratulate Their 'Idol'
McPhee's eager fans posted their congratulatory messages on her Instagram page.
"Yes!!! From your first audition on American Idol, I've been a fan! Although I'd say this isn't a debut...you've already killed it on Smash," posted one Instagram follower.
Other fans left encouraging notes and expressed their desires to see McPhee perform as Jenna on the Broadway stage. Some fans were worried that she would permanently leave other projects behind.
"I hope this doesn't mean you're leaving Scorpion," wrote one concerned Instagram follower.
All About 'Waitress'
Variety reported that the plot for McPhee's character, Jenna, involves a pie-baking contest. Jenna hopes that the competition would be able to transform her life.
The Waitress is a musical adaptation of a 2007 film of the same name and focuses on a woman trying to escape her cruel relationship with her husband. The woman finds freedom through her love of baking, and she sets out to change the dessert industry.
According to Playbill, McPhee is expected to perform as Jenna starting April 10 and is scheduled to take her final bow on June 17.
Katharine's Love Story
As McPhee plans her Broadway debut, the Smash and American Idol alum has been in the tabloids because of her romantic relationship with iconic music producer David Foster.
On Jan. 29, Foster and McPhee appeared at Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler's Grammy watch party. Foster gave her a shout-out when he performed on stage.
The shout-out comes after reports revealed that Foster insisted that the "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" singer should sign a prenuptial agreement if they were going to get married in the future.
Near the end of 2017, many tabloid rumors stated that McPhee was dating Foster to stir up publicity for her new album I Fall in Love Too Easily.
