Demi Lovato visited Good Morning America on Thursday and spoke about a new program she created in memory of her father Patrick's recent death.

The 20-year-old singer revealed that this week she will be launching the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program in collaboration with the wellness program CAST Recovery.

"I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason," Lovato said. "And I've dealt with mental illness but my father also dealt with mental illness and he wasn't able to function very well in society and that happens to a lot of people."

Through the program, Lovato will help one person at a time and pay for his or her treatment. The Lovato Treatment Scholarship covers expenses for someone struggling with mental health and/or addiction issues, according to the program's website. It also funds the costs for one of CAST Recovery's transitional living homes, as well as the clinical services provided at CAST's outpatient program.

Despite her rocky relationship with her father, Lovato said, "My father and I didn't have the most ideal relationship but at the end of the day he's still my dad; I grew up with him. He was a wonderful person and it's difficult."

Lovato and her late father had been estranged since 2007. She wrote a personal ballad about their relationship called For The Love Of A Daughter. In the track she calls her father "selfish" and "hopeless." The song appears on her 2011 album Unbroken.

When asked on the show how she's handling his death, Lovato said, "I'm handling it okay."

Her program is also a result of personal difficulties. In the past, the star had publicly spoken about her own struggles with an eating disorder and cutting herself. The former Disney star entered a rehab in Illinois in 2010 when she was 18 years old.

After her rehab stint, Lovato released her fourth studio album Demi in May and signed on as a judge on the U.S. X Factor for the second time. She will also be performing on Good Morning America on Friday.
