Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the upcoming Marvel superhero mash-up Avengers: Infinity War.

However, the actor recently revealed that currently there are no plans for a second standalone Doctor Strange film.

No Plans For A 'Doctor Strange' Sequel

Doctor Strange fist made his debut in Marvel's Cinematic Universe in 2016. After a brief cameo in Thor: Ragnarok, he also returns as the Sorcerer Supreme in the upcoming Avengers film to help Earth's Mightiest Heroes take on the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin).

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly for Infinity War, Cumberbatch was asked about what lies in store for Doctor Strange and whether or not there will be a sequel, which Marvel has not yet officially confirmed or announced.

"Not at the moment, no. The masterplan is continually in flux, so it would be out of order for me to speculate," he said.

The original film did set things up for a sequel as Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays the role of Mordo, moves over to the dark side, suggesting that he will play the villain in a would-be follow-up.

There's no doubt that there will be a Doctor Strange sequel given the original's performance at the box office. The film raked in a whopping $677 million at the worldwide box office and that's no ordinary feat for a solo film that's not Black Panther.

Doctor Strange To Play Villain In 'Avengers: Infinity War?'

The recently released final trailer for the upcoming film teases an epic battle between the Avengers, their superhero allies, and Thanos, who seeks to combine the six infinity stones in order to complete the Infinity Gauntlet: a tool that will make him the most powerful being in existence.

One of the shots also shows Strange in what appears to be an extremely painful situation for the Master of the Mystic Arts. Cumberbatch's character is seen screaming as his face is pierced with what looks like sharp glass crystals.

In the subsequent scene, fans see Black Order member Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), who has the power to manipulate others and control their minds without them knowing, raising his finger to his lips.

For the uninitiated, in the comics, Thanos sends Maw to deal with Strange and find out where the Infinity stones are. Maw uses his powers to extract the information from the Sorcerer Supreme and turn him into a double agent who reports back to him even as he seems to be helping

In Infinity War, he uses this power to turn Strange into an unwitting agent who reports back to him even as he seems to be helping his superhero pals.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27.
