Miley Cyrus 'We Can't Stop' VIDEO Director Addresses Strange Scenes Including Dancing Teddy Bears
The director of Miley Cyrus' music video for We Can't Stop explained some of the clip's bizarre images that have left viewers scratching their heads.
In the music video, the singer bounces around with a giant teddy bear backpack, a hand bleeds pink paint, a guy takes a bite out of a dollar-filled sandwich and there is a skull made of French fries. Director Diane Martel explained to MTV News the concept behind We Can't Stop's attention-grabbing visuals, even revealing where some of the ideas stemmed from.
"The teddy bears my art director [Aramis Israel] found, and I knew they had to go on the twerkers' backs," she said of one scene that makes it appear as though the giant bears are dancing as Cyrus and other women have their backs to the camera.
Martel said she and Israel looked to their favorite blogs for inspiration: "I'm really into kid's culture these days and this is the audience I play to, gotta keep 'em happy!"
Some ideas for the video were decided upon at the last moment, including the take where a partygoer rubs white bread all of his face and one where someone pretends to amputate their fingers, resulting in pink paint gushing out. Martel explained, "The bread and the fingers I made up during a location scout in the kitchen."
While on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday, Cyrus said the bread means "Got to get the bread! A little bit of money." She added, "And also that it's kind of weird. A trippy moment. We thought it was symbolic for money."
The French fry skull was created by visual artist Christopher Chiappa. Cyrus called the concept "nothing too deep" and said to made it they tried using fries from McDonalds and In-N-Out, but In-N-Out worked the best.
Another key moment Martel talked about was the brawl Cyrus gets into in the video.
"That fight scene is awesome. What female artist lets themselves get their ass kicked in their own video?" she said. "This is what I mean about her, Miley is my hero."
