Lady Gaga altered The Star-Spangled Banner during her rendition at the New York City Gay Pride Parade's Kickoff Rally on Friday to cater to the gay community.

While holding up the colorful pride flag, Gaga sang, "Oh, say does that star-spangled flag of pride yet wave," instead of the traditional "star-spangled banner yet wave."

In addition, she ended the song with "And a home for the gay," instead of the line "and the home of the brave."

Before beginning her performance the 27-year-old also gave a heartfelt speech to the audience.

"It's my LGBT friends and fans who always said to me, 'I knew Lady Gaga when.' Well look who the star is now," she said pointing to the audience. "Now, I get to say, 'I knew you when you suffered, when you felt unequal, when you felt there was nothing to look forward to. I knew you then, and I knew you when, but I really know you now.'"

Her speech was received with tons of applause. Her words came days after the Supreme Court's decision to end the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) on June 27 calling it "unconstitutional." The decision was won with a 5-4 vote.

Gaga also had some words for the Supreme Court and its decision.

"I would like to thank everyone from the Supreme Court to every legislator and political leader that has ever stood with us," she said.

This performance was Gaga's first since she cancelled her Born This Way Ball tour for hip surgery in February.

"To the fans in Chicago Detroit & Hamilton I hope you can forgive me, as it is nearly impossible for me to forgive myself. Im devastated & sad. It will hopefully heal as soon as possible, I hate this. I hate this so much. I love you and Im sorry," she had written on her Facebook page after the cancellation.

The singer is also currently working on her fourth studio album ARTPOP which will be released sometime in 2013.
