Meghan Markle Isn't Wearing Kate Middleton's Tiara For The Royal Wedding, Here's Why
When Meghan Markle ties the knot to Prince Harry, she won’t be wearing the historic and iconic tiara that Kate Middleton wore when she married his brother, Prince William. Now fans know why.
Why Meghan Won't Wear Kate's Tiara
Markle and Prince William's wife, Middleton, seem to get along great as Markle continues her journey to be a part of the royal family. Still, new reports reveal Markle will not be wearing Middleton’s tiara when she marries Prince Harry.
The tiara in question is the one Middleton wore when she married Prince William back in 2011. It originally belonged to Queen Elizabeth II. She received it as a gift from her mother, the Queen Mother when Queen Elizabeth II turned 18. The tiara dates back to when Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, gave Queen Mother the tiara in 1936.
Considering it’s a historical artifact, the item is set to be featured at the National Gallery of Australia from March 30 through July 22. That’s why Markle won’t be able to wear it when she marries Prince Harry on May 19.
The tiara is slated to be a part of a special jewelry show called “Cartier: The Exhibition,” that will display a variety of 300 pieces from tiaras to earrings and necklaces. Along with the tiara, other notable pieces featured in the display are Dame Nellie Melba’s diamond broach and Princess Grace of Monaco’s engagement ring that features 10.48 carats. Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s diamond necklace will also be a part of the display.
As for what Markle will don as a tiara on her big day, the word is she might wear Princess Diana’s Spencer Tiara that she wore when she got married in 1981. There’s also speculation she’ll go the modern route to compliment her dress.
“It won’t be a traditional headdress meaning a diamond tiara,” said Leslie Field, who wrote a book on the Queen’s jewelry collection. “It may be that it is a headdress as opposed to a tiara. It could be her American heritage and could be made with fabric flowers, set with fake jewels.”

Eva Hartling, vice president of Maison Birks, also shared what she thinks Markle will wear to the wedding. She said she believes that Markle will still continue the tradition and borrow a tiara from the Queen. Maison Birks is reportedly on the top of the list of Markle’s favorite jewelers.
While guests reportedly have to stick to strict guidelines, Hartling added that she’s convinced Markle will select something that is “true to her style” and classic when it comes to other pieces like earrings. She said she expects to see Markle in modest jewelry.
