'The Hunger Games' earned $155 million at the U.S. and Canadian box office over the weekend, setting a new record for a non-sequel opening day weekend, and coming in with the third best opening day all time just behind heavy-hitting sequels 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2' ($169.2 million) and 'The Dark Night' ($158 million) while surpassing blockbusters from the Twilight Saga.

The film earned $59.3 million in foreign box offices across 67 markets, bringing the worldwide gross to $214.3 million.

'Hunger Games,' Lionsgate Entertainment production, began the opening weekend with a $19.7 million gain from midnight shows on Friday. Hunger Games now holds the record for biggest box office results in March, easily topping the $116.1 million earned by Alice in Wonderland.

The book, based on the novel by Susan Collins, stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. The film is directed by Gary Ross.

Other top films which 'Hunger Games' surpassed include Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million) and 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' ($142.8 million) as well as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1' ($138.1 million.)
