Tony Award Nominations 2018: Tina Fey's 'Mean Girls' And 'SpongeBob SquarePants' Lead With 12 Nods
The nominations for this year’s Tony Awards are in! Read to find out which musicals are leading the ranks for the coveted wins.
Congratulations are in order for Tina Fey’s Mean Girls: The Musical. The production has the most nominations along with SpongeBob SquarePants. Both shows were given 12 nods each. They’re both up for major awards, including the most prestigious award Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score.
SpongeBob SquarePants actor Ethan Slater is also nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Also nominated are Harry Hadden-Paton of My Fair Lady, Joshua Henry of Carousel, and Tony Shalhoub of The Band’s Visit.
Mean Girls star Taylor Louderman is up for Best Leading Actress in a Musical along with Jessie Mueller of Carousel, Katrina Lenk of The Band’s Visit, LaChanze of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, Once On This Island star Hailey Kilgore, and My Fair Lady’s Lauren Ambrose.
Also up for Best Musical is The Band’s Visit and Frozen. The Best Play nominations include The Children, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Junk, and Fairnelli and the King. SpongeBob SquarePants and Mean Girls are also slated to face off against Frozen and The Band’s Visit for Best Book of a Musical.
SpongeBob SquarePants and Mean Girls are also nominated for Best Original Score along with Angels in America, The Band’s Visit, and Frozen.
Other notable mentions include revivals of Angels in America, Carousel, and The Band’s Visit. Those musicals are up for 11 nominations each. Carousel was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical against My Fair Lady and Once on This Island, while Angels in America is up for Best Revival of a Play. Other contenders up for that nomination are Lobby Hero, Three Tall Women, The Iceman Cometh, and Travesties.
In other revival news, My Fair Lady, Once On This Island, and Carousel are up for Best Revival of a Musical.
Best Original Score nominees are Angels in America, The Band’s Visit, Frozen, Mean Girls, and SpongeBob SquarePants.
Other nominees include Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Junk, Latin History for Morons, Fairnelli and the King, and The Children for Best Play.
The Tony Awards air on CBS June 10. Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles will serve as hosts for this year’s festivities.
