Taylor Swift News: John Mayer Addresses Rumors 'Paper Doll' Is About His Ex Girlfriend [VIDEO]
John Mayer's latest single Paper Doll has many fans speculating that the song is about his ex, Taylor Swift.
During a performance on the TODAY show Friday, July 5, the 35-year-old singer was asked to address rumors that his new single was written in response to Swift's 2010 song, Dear John.
"There's been some speculation from the press that it might be about someone," co-host Willie Geist asked, without directly mentioning Swift's name. "True or false?"
Mayer tried to play coy.
"Yeah, songwriters write songs because of people, about people," Mayer said. "Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don't get involved with [it]. It's none of my business."
In the chorus, Mayer sings, "You're like 22 girls in one/ And none of them know what they're running from/ Was it just too far to fall for a little paper doll?"
Mayer, who dated Swift in 2009. previously told Rolling Stone Swift's tune, Dear John, "humiliated" him and slammed the song as a "kind of cheap songwriting."
In her hit song, she croons, "Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone / Don't think I was too young to be messed with? / The girl in the dress cried the whole way home."
