Writing songs about heartbreak and sharing the tunes with her fans helped Taylor Swift get over her breakup from Harry Styles and other ex-boyfriends, the Red singer said.

Swift, 23, broke up with Styles, 19, in January. Since the split, she used songwriting to help her "clear out" her brain and move past the relationship. The songstress is known for penning empowering songs for women that are rumored to have been inspired by her past lovers and not only Styles. She allegedly wrote Dear John about John Mayer and All Too Well about Jake Gyllenhaal.

The song that got her on the map back in 2009, Teardrops on My Guitar, was about a different kind of heartbreak - wanting the attention of a boy who likes someone else. Her most recent songs about getting over lost lovers, from her 2012 Red album, include I Knew You Were Trouble and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

Swift reportedly told E! News about heartbreak, "There's something so beautiful about people who are heartbroken; they think about how they're feeling much more."

"I think when you're heartbroken you need music more than when you're not," she said. "Love is one of those things that is so simple...you only need to think about it when it's bad, so when music is all that you have and you're lonely or you're missing someone and you write a song that says exactly how you feel."

"There is sort of a gratification you get from that, it almost helps you move on," she added.

Swift admitted in June that she already started writing songs for her next album. She is currently touring the U.S. with headliner Ed Sheeran and in June they released the music video for their collaboration Everything Has Changed.

Swift's next performance is on July 13 in East Rutherford, N.J.
