Daft Punk 'Random Access Memories' Album Intended to Have Kanye West 'Black Skinhead' Percussion [VIDEO]
The percussion heard on Kanye West's new single Black Skinhead was originally intended for Daft Punk, according to one of the duo's members.
Daft Punk helped produce the first three songs on West's new Yeezus album: On Sight, Black Skinhead and I Am a God. Thomas Bangalter, one of the duo's members, told Vibe Wednesday that West had asked for the band's help in producing the new album.
"We were the first people that Kanye came to," Bangalter said. "He really responded positively to those ideas we were throwing out to him. And then he ran with it and built the record, working with a lot of other producers and based on maybe some of the initial directions that we had laid out together."
Bangalter said that the first track they recorded was Black Skinhead, though the track did not have an entirely new percussion line.
"The drums we had recorded earlier during the recording of our album [Random Access Memories], so we had those," he revealed. "It was a great twist of pushing the envelope."
Black Skinhead is West's first single off Yeezus. West debuted the controversial song on the finale of Saturday Night Live on May 18. The official music video was leaked on Monday, July 8 without West's permission, causing him to go on a Twitter rant. He said that the video would be fully ready for release next week before threatening, "To whoever leaked the video ... F*** YOU!"
Both West and Daft Punk currently have top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart. West's Yeezus sold 39,000 copies over the past week and has sold 431,000 total since its debut, according to a Wednesday report by Billboard. He is No. 3 on the current album chart. Daft Punk's Random Access Memories is in the No. 7 position, having sold 29,000 copies over the past week. It has sold over 600,000 copies since its debut.
