The official trailer for The Canyons starring Lindsay Lohan was released this week.

"Okay, tell me something - do you really like movies? Really, really like movies? When was the last time you went to see a movie in the theater - you know, a movie that you really felt meant something to you?" Lohan is heard saying in the clip.

The 27-year-old actress stars alongside adult film actor James Deen and Nolan Gerard Funk, who played in the TV shows Awkward and Glee respectively. Set in present day Los Angeles, the movie is directed by Paul Schrader, who wrote the 1976 Taxi Driver starring Robert De Niro. It's also written by Bret Easton Ellis, the man behind the novels American Psycho and Less Than Zero.

The film focuses on Lohan's character named Tara, an aspiring actress, and her life with her boyfriend Christian, who is a movie producer. Christian is played by Deen.

"I guess I'd like to keep some parts of my life private," Lohan is also heard saying in the trailer.

The movie was rejected by Sundance and the South by Southwest film festival because of reported quality issues. Still, it has received a lot of buzz. Lohan's casting in the film could be a reason.

"She gave me a lot to work off of," Funk told Cambio in regards to his co-star. Funk, who plays the character Ryan, also praised the rest of the crew he worked with.

"I'm a big fan of both the director who did American Gigolo and wrote Raging Bull and Bret Easton Ellis who wrote Less Than Zero - I mean, that was one of my favorite movies. So definitely getting to work with some like really serious film people was a cool experience," he said.

Other stars in the film include Gus Van Sant, Amanda Brooks, Tenille Houston and Michelle LaRue.

The Canyons comes to U.S. theaters on Aug. 2.
