Box Office Report: 'Despicable Me 2' Expected to Hold No. 1 Spot Against New Releases 'Grown-Ups 2' & 'Pacific Rim' [VIDEO]
The box office race this weekend may be too close to call as Despicable Me 2 holds strong in its second week against new contenders Grown Ups 2 and Pacific Rim.
Despicable Me 2 was the No. 1 movie last weekend and might have similar success this weekend. The animated sequel made $15 million Friday and is projected to make $47 million in its weekend total.
Grown Ups 2 grossed $16.5 million on Friday, making it the highest grossing film of the day, but projections are expecting $46 million over the weekend, just on the heels of Despicable Me 2's total. The Adam Sandler comedy is a sequel to 2010's Grown Ups, which grossed over $162 million at the box office.
Action blockbuster Pacific Rim is looking to come close to the two sequels, with a $37 million projection this weekend. It made $13.5 million on Friday, coming in at a close No. 3 and is expected to do the same over the weekend. Pacific Rim is one of the only mainstream films this summer to be an original concept, not a sequel, remake or adaptation.
The Heat, another original concept film, is expected to come in a No. 4 this weekend. The Sandra Bullock/Melissa McCarthy buddy cop comedy is in its third week of release and is expected to gross $13 million. The film grossed $4.2 million Friday.
Two Disney films are expected to contend for the No. 5 slot: The Lone Ranger and Monsters University. Each film is expected to gross about $10.5 million over the weekend in their second and fourth weeks of release, respectively. The Lone Ranger grossed $3.4 million Friday while Monsters University grossed $3.3 million.
Rounding out the top 10 this weekend is projected to be World War Z (No. 7 with $9.3 million), White House Down (No. 8 with $6 million), Man of Steel (No. 9 with $5 million) and Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain (No. 10 with $4.7 million).
