Adam Lambert is parting ways with his record label RCA due to creative differences, according to a statement the artist released Friday.

RCA had requested that the American Idol alum record an entire album full of covers of '80s songs for his next album, which Lambert had no desire to do. In a letter written to The Hollywood Reporter Friday, Lambert revealed that he would be leaving the label due to creative differences.

"At this point, we are indeed having the oft-cited "creative differences" as to what my next project will be," Lambert wrote. "The label is pushing for an (80's) covers album, and feels that this is the only kind of release they are prepared to support." He added that while there are many great songs from that decade, his heart simply wasn't in it to record a full album of covers.

He admitted that he had had a good relationship with RCA in the past, which supported him through his first two albums, For Your Entertainment and Trespassing, thanking them for helping him grow as an artist. However, he said that artistically he had to move forward with a new sound.

"I am already deep into writing new material with some very talented colleagues for a brand new album, and I can't tell you how excited I am to share this new sound & direction," Lambert wrote.

Lambert announced Wednesday that he would also be joining the cast of Glee when the show returns this fall. He had previously admitted that he was a huge fan of the show, claiming that it "really paints a picture of what it's like to be an arts kid in high school."

It is unknown if Lambert will be appearing as a series regular, in a recurring role or simply in a guest appearance.
