Kate Middleton Baby Name: 'Baby Cambridge' After Duke and Duchess Despite Gender
Whether Kate Middleton gives birth to a girl or boy, commoners will refer to the little one as Baby Cambridge.
Baby Cambridge is after Prince William and Middleton's royal titles, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The baby won't have a last name since most royals don't cite a last name, although they often take their last name from their title.
Boy or girl, the new addition one will be third in line to the throne, after Prince William. Part of the law changed after Prince William and Middleton were married.
Britain's parliament moved to end the country's centuries-old tradition in which male heirs superseded female heirs, no matter who was born first, according to the Washington Post.
"Put simply, if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were to have a little girl, that girl would one day be our queen," Prime Minister David Cameron said when announcing the proposal.
As far as a first name, many are speculating that the couple will give the baby a family name.
Professional betters are placing odds on Alexandra, Victoria, Elizabeth, after the queen, or Diana, after the prince's late mother, as likely girl names. Male baby favorites are George and Arthur, as both were names of the queen's father.
Any other babies born in Britain that have the same birthday as Baby Cambridge will each receive a lucky silver penny, which is the British version of the silver spoon. Giving a newborn silver symbolizes a good fortune and health.
The baby's date of birth, name and gender will be sent out on a notice and will be placed on the gates of Buckingham Palace. However, there is no indication on when that information will be made available to the public.
Middleton was admitted into St. Mary's hospital Monday morning and was said to have walked in with William at the side entrance of Lindo Wing.
"The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge," a palace spokesman said.
