Sandra Bullock 'Gravity' Filming Was ‘Very Intense’ Director Says of New Movie [VIDEO]
Sandra Bullock takes on the role of a medical engineer in her new film Gravity and the movie's director revealed recently that it was a tough character for the actress to portray.
"It was a very intense experience for Sandra, I must admit," Cuaron revealed at Comic-Con Sand Diego on July 20. "It required for her to be isolated [in a cube of LED lights]. Outside there were robots holding the camera, in some instances the robot would be holding the lights."
The sci-fi thriller focuses on Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) and a veteran astronaut (George Clooney) who end up detached from their spacecraft and are left drifting through outer space.
Bullock tried to get fully into character while filming, with Cuaron saying, "Sandra was completely insulated in that cube. Sandra chose to just stay in there between takes...as Sandra said, it was very mathematical."
The 49-year-old actress explained what it felt like being in a cube device, which mimicked being in a space ship.
"His voice, that's all I ever heard. Rarely did I see his face," Bullock told JoBlo about taking cues from Cuaron during filming. "Everything- the minute I got into my cubes or my rigs, was black and silence."
If it wasn't for her dance background, gymnastic skills and "musical understanding of rhythm," The Heat star said she wouldn't have been prepared for the grueling role.
"It was all physicality- no one could really tell me what I needed to prepare for so I sort of took my own cue," Bullock added. "I always knew I was a jack of many trades that were pretty much useless to anyone else and for once, all of those things I sort of acquired during my lifetime were all needed."
Gravity will open the 70th Annual Venice Film Festival on Aug. 28 in 3D and will be released in theaters Oct. 4.
