'The Bachelorette' 2013 Season 9 Finale, Part 1 Recap: Brooks Forester Dramatic Exit & Desiree Hartsock Cries (Watch)
Part 1 of The Bachelorette season 9 finale ended Monday with a dramatic exit of Brooks Forester after he admitted that he "wasn't madly in love" with the bachelorette, Desiree Hartsock.
When ABC described the episode as one of the "most explosive, dramatic and emotional moments" in Bachelorette history, they were not kidding.
The first hour of the two-part finale showed Hartsock have so much success on dates with two of her three remaining three suitors -- Drew Kenney and Chris Siegfreid -- that she offered both of them an opportunity to have an overnight date at the Fantasy Suites, where the cameras do not folllow them.
The final hour provided a shocking bombshell confession from Brook Forester. Instead of meeting Hartsock in Antigua, viewers were treated to extended footage of Forester in Utah meeting with his family to discuss his feelings about his future with Hartsock. He repeatedly told them she was a great woman who had feelings for him, unfortunately the feeling wasn't mutual.
"I love my relationship with Desiree and I keep wondering why it is that I'm not at the stage yet to say to Desiree, 'I love you.'" Forester told a family member, "The idea of proposing to her at the end of this makes me really uncomfortable."
Meanwhile, Hartsock told the cameras that after two successful dates with Siegfried and Kenney, it is Forester she looks most forward to seeing.
"Even though I'm falling in love with the other guys, I still have deeper feelings for Brooks," Hartsock said. "I know that I am falling in love with him. I'm in love with Brooks and I miss him every day that I'm not with him."
When Forester arrived in Antigua, he shared his true feelings with host Chris Harrison first.
"I don't feel like I'll regret this...I think I've come to a conclusion where I don't think that Des is the love of my life," Brooks told Harrison. "I gave it everything that I had and I love so many things about Desiree, but I'm not in love with her."
Harrison told Forester he had to tell Hartsock how he really felt immediately. When Forester met with her, he was visibly nervous and shaking as he rambled incomprehensible words.
"You know I really want to be madly in love with you," he told her.
Hartsock eye's started to tear up before he finally told her he was ending the relationship. Confused as to why he waited so long to tell her how he felt along, she asked him repeatedly "Why now?" as she sobbed.
"I love you, I do," Hartsock said through tears. "You're the only one that I could say that to. It sucks because for once in my life I was hopeful. It just sucks that I loved you. I do love you, regardless."
Hartsock confessed she developed the most feelings for Forester and wanted to go on dates with him over other men.
"I didn't want to share my heart, I wanted to give it to you," she said.
Hartsock later told the cameras that the breakup broke her heart because she was in love with Forester the most. She said, "I just can't love [Drew and Chris] as much as they love me and that's not what they deserve. Honestly, for me it's over."
Fans will learn who Hartsock decides to spend the rest of her life with in The Bachelorette season 9 finale on Monday, Aug. 5 at 8 p.m. EST. The Bachelorette: After The Rose special will follow immediately at 10 p.m. EST.
