Camilla Parker Bowles' Original Title Before Becoming Duchess of Cornwall -- Here's Why She Never Wanted To Use It
Before being recognized as the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker Bowles was granted a special title.
Camilla's future title as Queen Consort was approved by Queen Elizabeth II, who even specified in a statement how her daughter-in-law should use the title when her husband Prince Charles becomes King.
Camilla's coronation represented a 180-degree flip from the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall's wedding day in 2005, when Buckingham Palace declared that she would wear the Princess Consort style as her husband sat on the throne.
That comment, however, was made 17 years ago. It was also established at the time that she will be referred to as Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall.
Despite having the legal right to use a more grand-sounding title, she apparently rejected.
Prince Charles is known as the Prince of Wales, hence his wife is entitled to the title of Princess of Wales.
Princess Diana, Prince Charles' late ex-wife, was the last person to use the title.
Why Camilla Parker Bowles Don't Want To Be Princess of Wales
Camilla is said to have opted not to use the title of Princess of Wales out of respect for Diana Spencer and to avoid any misunderstandings or difficulties with the people.
After all, many Britons had and still have negative views of her.
Royal historian Marlene Koenig wrote on her blog Royal Musings, "Camilla is HRH The Princess of Wales, but she is styled as HRH The Duchess of Cornwall."
"I believe the decision to use Cornwall was done to appease the Dianamanics. I think it is silly to not style Camilla as HRH The Princess of Wales."
Who Will Use The Princess of Wales Title Next?
One sure person who will be the next female royal to be styled Princess of Wales is Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.
When Prince Charles ascends to the throne, his eldest son, Prince William, will become the heir to the throne and assume the title of Prince of Wales.
However, as of this writing, it is unclear whether the Duke of Cambridge will be given the title because his father, the reigning monarch, will make the decision.
However, analysts expect that Prince Charles will give the title to Prince William, making Kate the Princess of Wales automatically.
