Here's Eleven Female Buddy Comedies To Watch With Your Gal Pals This Galentine's Day
If there is one thing we should thank Leslie Knope and Parks and Recreation for - and in truth, there are many, MANY things - it's the invention of Galentine's Day. What was previously just the day before a holiday that only people in love (or children and teachers, because those elementary school Valentine's Day parties were the bomb) can enjoy, is now a holiday in its own right, and one that Gal Pals everywhere can celebrate regardless of their romantic attachment status.
Galentine's Day is a day all about lifting other women up and celebrating the power (and fun) of female friendships - and what better way to celebrate that power than by watching an awesome comedy led by two amazing female friends?
That's what we've got for you here today: Here are 11 buddy comedies led by two (or more) women that you and your friends can enjoy together this Galentine's Day.
Baby Mama
When successful businesswoman Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey) realizes she wants a child, she tries to do IVF, but upon being told that she has a "crooked uterus," she decides to go with a surrogate (Amy Poehler)...but the surrogate, Angie Ostrwiski is nothing like what she expected.
You really can't go wrong on Galentine's Day with Leslie Knope, the original inventor of Galentine's Day and her IRL BFF.
The Hustle
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star in this one as two entirely different classes of scam artist - literally, one's high class and one's lowbrow. But when the two meet up, they realize they can combine their tactics - in a ridiculous way - to swindle a billionaire out of his money.
There's something so charming about the combination of their two styles of stealing that make this movie not only fun to watch, but also pretty compelling.
Girls' Trip
Four best friends - self-dubbed the Flossy Posse - reunite after growing apart over the years, when one of them invites the rest on her work trip to be the keynote speaker at the Essence Festival. The four - played by Tiffany Haddish, Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, and Jada Pinkett-Smith, turn it into a true Girls' Trip together in New Orleans, dancing, drinking - and yes, ok, fighting a little, but would it really be a girls' trip without it?
Bad Moms
What does it mean to be Bad Moms, really?
Well, actresses Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn find out exactly that in this mommy dramedy, about what happens when modern moms finally realize they can't keep up with today's intense expectations. In going off the rails, these women shake up every mom in their school - and their own lives - and come out on the other end better friends, and better moms. (Even if they do get trashed at a grocery store along the way.)
Miss Congeniality
A tried and true classic - Miss Congeniality is one of the ultimate movies about the power of female friendship. Sandra Bullock stars as Agent Grace Hart - or Gracie Lou Freebush from New Jersey - and infiltrates a beauty pageant in order to try to stop a serial killer. What she ends up finding there, however, is even more than that - she finds the friends she never had, and she finds a piece of herself, too.
Sister Act
Another absolute classic: When Deloris Van Carter (Whoopi Goldberg), a lounge singer, sees her mobster boyfriend commit a murder, she's put into the witness protection program - as a nun. In order to keep her from making trouble at the convent, they put her in the choir, but before they know it, she's turned that choir into a vibrant and soulful act that gets everyone's attention.
The Heat
This is a literal female buddy cop movie. Once again returning as an FBI agent, this time Sandra Bullock is the more methodical - and egotistical - Agent Sarah Ashburn, who ends up partnered with the loud-mouthed, foul talking Boston-born cop Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), who would rather just go with her gut. This unlikely pair is hilarious to watch as they figure out that their differences may actually be more helpful - and eye opening - than either of them thought.
First Wives Club
When one of their old college friends plunges to hear death after her husband leaves her for a younger woman, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton reunite at the funeral. After catching up, the trio realize that all of their ex husbands have been treating them poorly - and they decide to plot revenge against them.
B.A.P.S
1997's B.A.P.S - which stands for Black American Princesses - tells the story of Nisi (Halle Berry) and Mickey (Natalie Desselle), two waitresses at a restaurant in Georgia who have a dream to open up a business that combines soul food with a hair salon. In order to try to raise money for this project, they fly to LA to audition for a music video, but through a series of mishaps, end up at the estate of an elderly billionaire instead.
The four (Nisi, Mickey, the gentleman, and his butler), despite having vast cultural differences, end up becoming great friends.
Nine To Five
An early comedy about women in the workplace, Nine To Five is the hilarious story of what happens when three women - Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda - who have been repeatedly passed over for a promotion because they're women - spend a night living out a drug-induced fantasy in which they exact revenge on their chauvinist boss. It's all in good fun - until the next day, when one of them worries that she may have actually poisoned him in real life.
Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar
When two best friends from a small Nebraska town, Barb (Annie Mumolo) and Star (Kristen Wiig), decide to head out and see the world (more specifically, Vista Del Mar, Florida), they expect a good time. What they do not expect is to get tangled up in the nefarious plan of one Sarah Gordon Fisherman (also played by Wiig), who plans to unleash killer mosquitos on the town as revenge for them bullying her as a child. (Don't worry, it's got a happy ending!)
