New Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers Trailer With John Mulaney and Andy Samberg Promises 'Roger Rabbit' Style Fun - But Something's Off About Dale
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers
are back in business!
Sort of.
Disney is rebooting one of their best classic animated cartoons from the 80s, but they're doing it in a very tongue-in-cheek way. Chip and Dale weren't really the Rescue Rangers - they were movie stars on one of the best TV shows in the world, and now, in the Golden Age of Reboots, their producer wants them back on the job.
But things have changed since the last episode of Rescue Rangers they were in together, and their world is a very different place - their old friends have scattered to the wind. Some of them are addicted to cheese. Others - like Dale himself - have gotten "the CGI surgery," which is the most clever explanation for the switch in animation style we can think of.
Here's Disney's official synopsis for the picture:
"Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (voice of Sandberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend's life."
The new movie will take a turn when a mishap lands Chip and Dale in the literal Uncanny Valley - a place where the unsettling cats from Cats meets the blank stares of early video game NPCs (NPCs who sound a whole lot like Seth Rogen.) In Chip's words: "Remember that animation style where everything looked Real, but nothing looked Right?"
The new movie looks like it's going to be jam-packed with laughs, and with a cast like this, it would be really hard to get it wrong: The amazing John Mulaney and Andy Samberg are joined, not only by Rogen, but also Keegan-Michael Key, Will Arnett, J.K. Simmons, and more, to tie this self-aware throwback together. Plus, the trailer teases the return of The Lonely Island, Samberg's famed SNL music group, and some big animated cameos too - from Scrooge McDuck to Aladdin to Roger Rabbit himself.
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers looks like it's going to be a fun and wild ride for everyone involved, whether you loved the original cartoon or are too young to remember it existed. We can't wait to see Chip and Dale reunited after 30 years.
