Brandy Talks About The Fate Of The Nasty Girls Of 'Queens' And If The Hit ABC Show Will Return Next Season.
ABC's Queens was one crazy ride for viewers. Not only did we get a nostalgic taste of 90s Hip Hop, not only from the amazing cast the likes of Brandy and Eve, but also from the pretty excellent soundtrack which was added on from episode to episode. Like so many dramas, Queens did well to delve into the behind the scenes world of becoming a music sensation, while trying to live a normal life outside of an on-stage persona.
Everything from substance abuse, infidelity, LGBTQ issues, and finding out who your real family is, handled deftly and with all the tension and heart one needs to have a successful series. So why has it not been renewed for a second season?
The last episode left us with a cliffhanger which would be rife for a renewal, what with Naiomi (Brandy) rocking a Cinderella style wedding dress (meta nostalgia at its best), the group bringing on a new, younger member into the fold when Brianna (Eve) had to bow out due to the actresses real life pregnancy, and the fate of the new group dynamic.
When asked by Deadline if the show would return, Brandy was optimistic,
"I don't know. I hope that we get another chance to do what we all love to do. I know I would love to see more performances, more rapping, and more stage stuff if there is a Season 2. We didn't really get a chance to do a lot of the stage performances that I wanted to do this year. I hope we get to tell more great stories and have a lot more entertainment in terms of the group. Fingers crossed."
Even if the Queens is not renewed, Brandy would love to see life imitate art and create a label for women by women the way Nasty Girl Records was formed on the series,
"I was so impressed with that storyline because I was around in the '90s when a lot of this stuff was taking place. So I really enjoyed telling this story of these women creating their own label and coming together to help other women by pulling them up by the bootstraps and chasing their dreams together. That's what it's all about. I really want there to be a label for women, by women, and representing women. That would be amazing. Maybe we can manifest that? I felt in my heart that this was something I would really want."
Queens is a refreshing take on the modern drama, not only as a female-centric look at four very different women with the same passion, but because it introduces a side of the Hip Hop world rarely seen in modern television. Queens treats their characters with a behind the scenes realism of how the industry is smoke and mirrors hiding the true women behind their personas.
We need shows like this in our lives and can only hope that if it isn't brought back, it might at least be the inspiration for future series with a deeper message.
