Will 'Deadpool 3' Be The First R-Rated MCU Film For Disney? Kevin Feige Thinks So.
For those of us who need a bit more grit from our comic book movies, Deadpool 3 might be the film we need, what with the Disneyfication of all things Marvel. According to Kevin Feige, the chimichanga-loving Merc with a Mouth is going to be the first Marvel film to get an R rating while under the House of Mouse banner.
That might be just what we need since the ultra-violent Blade series is going PG-13 (which makes no sense) to satisfy the Disney brand, who, as of yet, has not given us an adult entry into the MCU.
1.56 billion dollars at the box office. That, right there, is the reason even the most sanitized studio in the game can't say no to a hardcore rating, that will inevitably bring in the big bucks worldwide.
Collider spoke with Ryan Reynolds, as well as director of Free Guy (and Reynold's soon-to-be-released The Adam Project) for Netflix, Shawn Levy. They asked about any updates they could share about the franchise, and Reynolds said,
"We pretty much talk about everything, but I'll say this about that particular subject is I'll have a batch of updates on that sooner rather than later, I hope. So I'll be able to get into stuff about Deadpool a little bit more clearly and definitively down the road."
It would be refreshing to see Disney actually give the copious number of properties they own that don't quite fit their brand the treatment they still deserve.
The problem with such a company is the sanitation they feel they need to infuse to keep patrons coming back, only to water down characters who were not meant for such a polish. Wolverine, Deadpool, Blade... these do not necessarily fit into the catagory of kid-friendly films. What made them popular was the darker takes infused in a universe of happy-go-lucky Spider-Man types. These are comic book properties that, last I checked, are not one-size-fits-all.
I'm still trying to figure out how much Disney+ is going to edit out of the Netflix properties (ie. Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Punisher) once they air on the streaming service.
This is the issue with major studios buying up all the IPs and trying to make them for a broad audience. They think they all need to link to one movie to another to create an overblown mutiverse. but try to imagine what a character like Deadpool might have said to Thanos during Infinity War. He would have even made the Mad Titian blush.
Stay in your lane Disney, or learn to evolve with the properties you have purchased. Remember, adults like comic books too.
Hopefully, Feige will keep his word on bringing some darker tones to the MCU.
