Ryan Reynolds Suffering Because of Mental Health Issues; Funny Persona Hiding Them?
Ryan Reynolds seemingly hides his battles using his funny persona.
Since he began his career as an actor, Reynolds usually showed off his hilarious side and ensured people would see nothing but happiness in him. But recently, he braved everything and opened up about the challenges he currently faces.
In a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Reynolds opened up about the mental health struggles he dealt with, including the anxiety he faced in the past. According to the actor, he feels like his personality has two parts that one "takes over" from time to time.
The 45-year-old star detailed that he would always be consumed by fear and anxiety whenever he appears on a talk show. What's worse is that, he would throw up on stage when his mental health issues increased.
"When I would go out on like, Letterman, back in the day, I would always be nervous. I remember I'd be standing backstage before the curtain would open, and I would think to myself, 'I'm gonna die. I'm literally gonna die here,'" he said.
But after a few moments, his other personality takes over and assures him everything is going to be okay.
When Ryan Reynolds Knows When He is Already OK
In the interview, Reynolds shared that he feels better when his heart rate finally drops and he starts breathing calmly.
As for the root cause of everything, the actor recalled how growing up in Canada with his father felt tense.
"I don't want to paint this picture that it was this, like, horrible place to grow up. But it was very tense," he said, describing his police officer father as a skin-covered landmine. "I watch carefully for danger, and as an adult, that can really come in handy."
Fortunately, he found another way to revisit his childhood after scoring a role in Netflix's "The Adam Project." In the film, which he also produces, he plays the role of a time-traveling pilot who meets his 12-year-old self.
He compared his role to his current life, saying his younger self would be proud of what he became.
Reynolds is currently living happily with his three daughters and wife, Blake Lively. Recently, the power couple announced they would donate $1 million to help displaced Ukrainians.
