Steph Curry Reveals How He's Managing Emotions Amidst His Parents' Shocking Divorce
Six months after the divorce of Steph Curry's parents, Sonya and Dell Curry, the Warriors point guard is speaking out about the painful turn of events.
Curry previously stated in an interview with The Ringer that managing his emotions after his parents' divorce after 33 years of marriage has been a difficult journey. But he's staying calm, amidst the circumstances.
"I could be mad and be like, 'Y'all effed this up.' I could have that approach," he said. "But it's going to be an acknowledgment of both of y'all in terms of how y'all raised me. The calmness I have in myself is because of y'all," he added.
The news of his parents' split surfaced last August, shocking NBA fans who were well aware of how much of a fixture Sonya and Dell were at their son's games.
Last December, when Curry became the NBA's all-time top three-point shooter, the exes were in attendance but sat apart at Madison Square Garden.
Curry contacted his parents individually after breaking Ray Allen's three-point mark.
"I had to make sure I was in that moment with both of them separately, and this wasn't just this whole kind of thing," he explained to The Ringer. "That is how I choose to approach that. Because it is challenging," he added.
After the Warriors defeated the Knicks, the father of three embraced his father behind Golden State's bench and presented Dell with the game ball. He then descended an MSG tunnel to visit his mother for an emotional reunion.
Later that night, the father-son combination partied in Manhattan with Curry's former Warriors colleague and current Nets guard Kevin Durant, as well as longtime friend and teammate Andre Iguodala.
Prior to the divorce, Sonya and Dell spent their time between seeing Steph Curry's games and going to watch his younger brother Seth Curry play.
Seth was dealt from the Sixers to the Nets on Feb. 10 in a blockbuster transaction in which James Harden was exchanged for Ben Simmons.
TMZ said in August that Sonya filed for divorce in North Carolina on June 14 - and that the ex-couple accused one other of infidelity. It's not clear if the divorce has already been finalized.
In 1988, the same year Steph was born, Sonya and Dell married. Dell was still active at the moment, having been named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year in 1994. Seth Curry was born in 1990, while Sydel Curry was born in 1994.
Dell remained with the Hornets until 2002, retiring as the franchise's all-time leading scorer (9,839) and 3-point field goal maker (929). He is now a color commentator for Hornets television broadcasts.
Curry discussed his son's accomplishments during a Charlotte broadcast and displayed the autographed game ball.
"That's a proud papa right there. I know how hard he's worked and I had no idea he'd make that many threes," Curry raved at the time.
