Naya Rivera's Family Receives Justice After Ventura County Settles Over Tragic Drowning
Naya Rivera's family and ex-husband Ryan Dorsey have recently struck a deal with the County of Ventura, effectively putting an end to their lengthy legal struggle with the county.
According to court records obtained by The Blast, the "Glee" star's estate and her four-year-old son Josey have notified the court of their settlement agreement with the singer.
According to reports, the actress hired a pontoon boat in Lake Piru, which is located just outside of Los Angeles, in July 2020.
However, the only other person on the boat was her son, and a few hours later, another boat came alongside theirs and noticed that it was empty save for the sleeping child.
They immediately contacted the authorities, who were able to apprehend Josey on the boat, but a large hunt for Naya Rivera was begun as a result of the incident.
Josey, according to reports, informed police that he and his mother were swimming when his mother suddenly flung him into the boat. He then claimed that he had never seen her again.
The body of the singer-actress was discovered in a lake five days later, and it had to be recognized using her dental records, which were discovered at the scene.
Naya Rivera's death, according to her family, may have been avoided if suitable warning signs had been in place at the lake, alerting people to the dangers.
The lawsuit also stated that the boat she had rented did not have the necessary safety equipment on board.
According to the lawsuit, 26 other people perished on the lake over a period of several years.
While all of this is going on, the accused have asserted their innocence, stating that the actress was provided a life vest but declined to wear one.
Specifically, according to Amjad Khan, the lawyer for Naya's family, "in the Josey Hollis Dorsey and the Estate of Naya Rivera's litigation relating to Naya Rivera's drowning death on July 8, 2020, all parties have entered into a global settlement, which is subject to approval by the Ventura Superior Court on March 16."
His statement continued by stating that with the settlement, Naya's son will be able to obtain proper recompense for witnessing his mother drown in the lake while on vacation.
"While the devastating loss of Josey's mother will never be completely forgotten, we are extremely delighted that the monetary settlement will provide Josey with significant assistance in moving forward with his life after this catastrophe."
It is currently unknown how much the county agreed to settle for because the terms of the agreement are confidential.
