Doctor Strange To Lead The Avengers According To MCU Head Kevin Feige. Calls Him The Anchor Of The Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Every great superhero team needs a leader. That through-line character who makes the hard decisions and is always one step ahead. Early on in the MCU Tony Stark and Steve Rogers were trading paint to be the head honcho of The Avengers. Alas, these two iconic characters have moved on, leaving room for a new team to assemble.
A logical choice might have been say Black Panther, though this issue is twofold, what with T'Challa already being the leader of Wakanda and also the tragic passing of actor Chadwick Boseman. Hawkeye is getting back into his role as a dad, and Black Widow, well, you get it.
But fear not. MCU guru Kevin Feige has revealed who might just be that anchor for the New Avengers. Doctor Strange. According to The Direct, Feige dropped this bit of information during Cumberbatch's Hollywood Walk of Fame celebration,
"Benedict has turned this character into an icon, appearing in a historic three of the top six films of all time. It's been quite a journey. I remember our very first meeting was set up as a general, and we wanted to pitch him this great character, and before we could, he said 'So tell me about Doctor Strange,' because you knew. Because somewhere you knew what this could be and you've always seen the tremendous potential in this character. Because of that, you've become the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the only actor capable of guiding us through the madness of the Multiverse."
Given that Marvel is leaning hard into the multiverse storyline, Doctor Strange would seem like the most logical choice to navigate the varying versions of reality. One might call the first Three Phases the science years of the MCU, ushering Phase Four into the mystic years where they focus on the characters who are more than just muscles and gadgetry, i.e. Wanda and Doctor Strange.
Mind you, The MCU is an ever changing, ever expanding story and all of this could change on a dime, but for now, let's wait and see if The Sorcerer Supreme is up to the challenge. I guess we'll have to wait and see when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hit theaters on May 6th.
