Tony Walton Dead: Broadway, Hollywood Mourn Death of Award-Winning Designer

Tony Walton, a prolific, well-respected, and well-known set and costume designer on Broadway and in Hollywood, passed away on March 2 as the result of stroke-related complications. He was 87 years old.
His awards through the years established how talented and passionate he was.
Stepdaughter Bridget LeRoy announced his death on Facebook, writing, "A fond and loving farewell to the most fabulous stepdad and human being in the world. Love you forever, Tony Walton. Have a great trip."
Walton was one of the most productive set designers of his generation, winning three Tony Awards for set design (Guys and Dolls in 1992, The House of Blue Leaves in 1986, and Pippin in 1973), an Emmy (Death of a Salesman in 1986), and an Oscar (for the art and set decoration in 1979's All That Jazz).
Mary Poppins, a 1964 Disney classic, The Wiz, Murder on the Orient Express, Fahrenheit 451, The Boy Friend, All That Jazz, Death of a Salesman, The Glass Menagerie, Regarding Henry, and Deathtrap are just a few of his film credits. There is no denying his contributions to making these films great successes.
His contributions in the Broadway cannot be overlooked as well. These include Chicago, The Real Thing and the Will Rogers Follies as well as in Our Town, I'm Not Rappaport, Uncle Vanya and Annie Get Your Gun. He has also designed for Harold Pinter's Moonlight and Ashes to Ashes as well as Our Town and I'm Not Rappaport. 1991 saw his induction into the Theater Hall of Fame.

A decade of his career at Madison Square Garden's Christmas Carol saw him also design the set for Julie Andrews' 2003 revival of The Boy Friend at the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, New York; a national tour of Goodspeed Opera House in 2005; and a national run of Goodspeed's 2005 production of The Boy Friend.
Director Bob Fosse, actor Paul Newman, director Sidney Lumet, producer Ken Russell, and actors Volker Schlöndorff and Francois Truffaut have all worked with him.
Walton earned a whopping 16 Tony Awards and three Academy nods for his work on the costumes for Mary Poppins, Murder on the Orient Express, and The Wiz. His accolades didn't end there, though. This post doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of all the accolades and honors he has received over the years.
By his wife, Gen LeRoy Walton, he leaves behind his two daughters (Emma Walton Hamilton and Bridget LeRoy) and five grandkids. On an as-yet-undetermined day, a private memorial ceremony will be taking place in Sag Harbor. There will be a public celebration at a later time.
