Paul Dano Says That Saran Wrap Doesn't Want to Be Associated with Him or His Take on The Riddler in 'The Batman'
In a recent appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," actor Paul Dano admitted that he may have another enemy other than Batman: Saran wrap. Dano mentioned that the cling wrap brand didn't want to be associated with The Riddler, the fearsome villain Dano plays in Matt Reeves' "The Batman."
In the same interview, Dano revealed that when Reeves approached him to play The Riddler, he was super excited to play the Batman villain. However, after the director told Dano that the character would be inspired by the Zodiac Killer, he began to realize just how dark he would have to go for his take on the iconic villain.
Perhaps this Zodiac Killer connection is why Saran wrap is reluctant to be associated with The Riddler - Dano's Riddler wraps plastic wrap around his head as part of his scary costume. Even Seth Meyers admitted that a staff member had confided that Dano's Riddler had given them nightmares. Apparently, things have gotten so bad that Dano was told to use the term "cling wrap" instead of the brand's name.
In a clip uploaded to YouTube, Dano says, "Well, you know, they actually don't want me talking about Saran wrap, Seth. I think I have to say 'cling wrap.' They don't want to be associated." This was in response to Meyers asking if Dano had brought anything home from set as a souvenir, such as the cling wrap that was part of his costume. Meyers goes on to joke that he actually has a deal with Saran wrap.
While it's fun to imagine a beef between Dano and the makers of Saran wrap, perhaps the cling wrap company can take the newfound association as free marketing, especially since "The Batman"'s opening weekend box office has now surged to the second highest since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
